The YWCA of Northwest Georgia celebrates 91 years of serving the communities!
Your YWCA of Northwest Georgia is a dynamic agency whose work has always surrounded two principles: empowering women and working for peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. Since our beginning in 1917, we have stood for the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women.
Over the years however, our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women has become ambiguous to the community. This is why on Monday, April 28, 2008, the YWCA of Northwest Georgia celebrated the YWCA National Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism at the King Center in Atlanta. An event that began in 1992 to bring awareness to the many ways in which racism still troubles our communities. To further our mission, we chose to do what Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
For us, the time is now. We’ve come a long way over the past 91 years but we till have years of changes to go. Racism affects everyone and its elimination demands that we each take accountability for finding and changing the views and behaviors that support its continued existence. Please join us in our effort to eliminate racism worldwide by taking the Birmingham pledge below. One day, one pledge, one race – HUMAN!
- I believe that every person has worth as an individual.
- I believe that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of race or color.
- I believe that every thought and every act of racial prejudice is harmful; if it is my thought or act, then it is harmful to me as well as to others.
- Therefore, from this day forward I will strive daily to eliminate racial prejudice from my thoughts and actions.
- I will discourage racial prejudice by others at every opportunity.
- I will treat all people with dignity and respect; and I will strive daily to honor this pledge, knowing that the world will be a better place because of my effort.
